The short answer is no. Steam cleaning a viscose rug is highly likely to cause irreversible damage, including fiber breakage, distortion, yellowing, and color fading. Viscose is considered a fragile, disposable fiber that cannot withstand the rigorous cleaning methods suitable for durable materials like wool or silk.

 

What is Viscose?

 

Viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber created from plant cellulose (wood, cotton, or bamboo) using a chemical process. Although derived from natural sources, its production involves toxic chemicals, making it environmentally harmful. It is often marketed misleadingly under various names, including Art Silk, Bamboo Silk, Rayon, Faux Silk, and Tencel. Despite these appealing monikers, viscose is neither sustainable nor durable.

 

Why Viscose is Unsuitable for Rugs

1. Apply Fabric Protector: Have a professional apply a light, controlled application of fabric protector immediately. This will offer some resistance against spills and reduce the risk of color issues, but it is not a complete shield.

2. Dry Vacuuming: Use a vacuum with gentle suction only. Avoid beater bars or power heads, which will damage the fibers and increase shedding.

3. Address Spills Carefully:

   • Water Spills: Immediately place a clean, white cotton towel over the spill, place a heavy weight on the towel, and allow it to absorb the moisture for 24 hours. Never rub the fibers.

   • Colored Spills: Lightly blot the area with a sponge dampened with a solution of two parts water and one part white vinegar. Follow the same weighted absorption process.

4. Avoid Over-Wetting: Excessive moisture from any source (cleaning, pet accidents, flooding) will likely cause permanent browning and structural damage, necessitating replacement.
